The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia

Broadcast Pioneers member Patrick Stoner has a B.A. in Theatre and Speech from the College of William and Mary, an M.A. in Drama from the University of Virginia, and he has completed his doctoral courses in Drama (ABD) at the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is a graduate of the National Critics’ Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center.

In his early career, immediately after college, Patrick Stoner was Managing Director of the Albemarle Playhouse in Charlottesville, Virginia; he then worked in radio in Richmond, Wilmington & Philadelphia. He worked as an actor in New York City & appeared on the soap opera, "Love of Life" before moving to Delaware with his wife, Dr. Joyce Hill Stoner. Patrick Stoner was an Associate Professor in the University of Delaware Theatre Department where he taught classes in dramatic history, acting in theatre & acting in film until 2005.

He began working at WHYY in 1980 as a theatre critic & then began reviewing films shortly thereafter. In 1986, the PBS American Program Service began syndicating Flicks (an interview program with stars & directors about filmcraft) and Quick Pics (one-minute "best bets" in current films). They still appear on dozens of PBS stations nationwide each week." Before joining WHYY, Patrick Stoner was chairman of the Delaware chapter of the Sierra Club & was a registered lobbyist in Dover for the environmental organization."

Patrick Stoner is a founding member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association & recently joined the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. He has been a member of America's oldest theatrical club, The PlayersNYC, since 1975. Stoner has two daughters, Catherine & Eliza; his grandson is David.
