at the Broadcast Pioneers Symposium
Saturday, October 26, 2013

This is the event that college students wait for all year! Once again, it's time for our annual Broadcast Pioneers Symposium. Area college students will see first hand a major market television station and will listen to advice from their staff. This year, our 15th annual event will again be held at the studios of WPVI-TV, 6abc. The date is Saturday morning, March 19, 2016 from 9 am to 12 noon. We start off with eats and soft drinks and end with a pizza lunch and more sodas.

PLEASE NOTE: These symposiums are an once a year event. Beginning this year, the symposium will be held in the spring. Our last one was in the fall of 2015 at CBS 3, KYW-TV. Now, they are in the spring. Miss this one and you'll have to wait until Spring 2017 (at NBC 10).

Each station is different. They operate different. They look different. Each one is different.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO SYMPOSIUM IN THE FALL. They are now in the spring

Information updates are posted at http://www.broadcastpioneers.com. This page is a continuation of the story running there.

HERE'S THE PLAN: We plan to put each student who wishes to do so on the Action News set and have them read some news. We'll record it, string them all together and stream it on the Broadcast Pioneers' YouTube Channel.

Pat Delsi, a former president and current chairman of this organization will be on the panel. He was the owner of WSSJ Radio in Camden. He worked for six decades in the Philadelphia market as an announcer, newscaster, disc jockey and more. We are still putting together the rest of our panel which will come from 6abc, WPVI. However, below is a link so you can see who has been on previous panels, just to give you an idea what to expect.

Here's a list of previous panels!

IMPORTANT!
READ THIS!

At our first symposium, a student asked us how to get an internship. We told her and she got one at an area television station. After the internship was over, they hired her part-time and then, they gave her a full-time position as a producer. We hear stories like this all the time.

Pat Delsi, our former president and current chairman of the board, mentioned that he was outside the Geator Gold studios at 7th and Market in Center City Philadelphia when a young man came up to him and asked if he happened to be Pat Delsi. Pat said, "Yes!" The young man mentioned the he attended one of our symposiums because he was having trouble getting an internship. He said with what he learned at the symposium, he was able to line up an internship with an area television station.

A young man was interested in working in newsradio. He attended one of our symposiums, got put in touch with the right people and got an internship and later a part-time job. He is now a full-time news anchor for the station. By the way, he was also one of our scholarship winners. Details on our scholarships will be announced at the symposium. Earlier this year, we awarded twenty $1,000 scholarships. You could be next.

PLEASE CARPOOL IF POSSIBLE!

This is what can happen when students attend our symposiums. Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia; Innovators in Philly Broadcasting.

YOU WILL BE MEETING ALOT OF IMPORTANT PEOPLE! SO DRESS TO IMPRESS! Dress is business casual. If in doubt, look at our photos of past events. It is important to arrive on-time or even early.

DIRECTIONS: WPVI is at 4100 City Avenue on the city side of the street. You enter the station's parking lot from Monument Road (across from Target). Put your starting location in a map making program and add your ending location at 4100 City Avenue. If you are coming by public transportation, You can take Route 65 bus from 69th Street Terminal or from Germantown. The Market Street El and suburban lines meet at 69th Street. Other route interact with the Market Elevated line. Here's the SEPTA Trip Planner!

Info about previous symposiums!

IMPORTANT! Since each symposium is different, you should still plan to attend even if you attended previous ones. Since each year, we rotate the station, it takes three different symposiums to see three different stations and network with different people. Even if you attended the last symposium that was held at WPVI-TV (that would be 2013), each one is enough different to warrant your attendance. You only need one contact from your networking to help you get that all important first job.
