WFIL Radio in the Widener Building

WFIL Radio in 1938

WFIL Radio "in action" in the Widener Building in center city Philadelphia. We don't know whom the engineer or announcer is. If you have any idea of whom either or both of these people are, please let us know.

Broadcast Pioneers member Charlie Higgins believes the photo dates from the 1930's because of the talk back microphone atop the console. So we are dating this picture as being approx. 1938. If you can help date it a little better, please contact us.

Charlie, by the way, worked at WFIL about a quarter century after this picture was taken, and he says: "...If WFIL had published a schedule as WCAU did I might have had the opportunity to keep it but they did not. The engineer and the announcer wrote times in on the schedule which was really the log. At WCAU a separate log was typed by the transmitter Technician as to what truly went on the air and at what time."
