Bill Shull grew up watching Philadelphia television. He was a regular viewer of local children’s shows like Captain Noah, Pixanne and Gene London's Cartoon Corners. Around age 12, he became hooked on Channel 6's Action News. He met anchorman Larry Kane and from then on knew that he wanted a career in TV.
He appeared on the KYW-TV children's quiz show Challenge in 1976, winning twice. Shull graduated from Lansdowne-Aldan High School in Lansdowne, PA. He then earned a journalism degree from Penn State University in 1986.
Shull's first job in broadcasting was at 1590 AM WQIQ in Aston. He was a disc jockey, board op and news reporter. The small radio station had a staff of seasoned veterans who provided priceless advice and guidance.
While attending Penn State he worked for WJAC-TV's State College Bureau as well as radio stations WMAJ, WXLR and WWZW. In 1987, Shull moved to Atlanta to work as a producer for CNN Headline News. After 6 years there, Shull returned home to Philadelphia to produce the 10 O’Clock News at WTXF, Fox 29.
Three years later, Shull was off to Washington, D.C. to produce the long-running talk show, The McLaughlin Group. In 1997, Shull again returned to Philadelphia TV, this time to WCAU, NBC10. He produced the number one 11pm newscast in Philadelphia, beating WPVI in two rating books in 2001 and 2002. No one at any station has done that since.
Shull is currently a news consultant for WRDE-TV, NBC in Rehoboth Beach, DE. The station is owned by fellow Broadcast Pioneers member Bob Backman. When he's not working in television, Shull is an avid aviation and sports photographer and golfer.
