The principals for Gateway Communications were Broadcast Pioneers members Lew Klein and George Koehler. Gateway started when Triangle Publications sold its stations. In 1971, WFIL-TV went to Capital Cities along with stations in New Haven and Fresno. The next year, 1972, Gateway purchased the Triangle stations in Altoona, Binghamton and Lebanon-Lancaster. In 1974, Gateway acquired WHTN-TV in Huntington.
