2008 College Symposium
NBC 10, Bala Cynwyd, PA
Saturday, October 11, 2008
This is the event that college students wait for all year! Once again, it's time for our annual Broadcast Pioneers Symposium. Area college students will see first hand a major market television station and will listen to advice from their staff. This year, our 10th annual event will again be held at the studios of WCAU, NBC 10. The date is Saturday morning, October 29, 2011 from 9 am to 12 noon.
Information updates are posted at http://www.broadcastpioneers.com. This page is a continuation of the story running there.
Our MC for the event will be Jerry Klein, former newsman for WCU Radio and KYW Newsradio, currently executive vice-president of Anne Klein Communications Group and our president. Introductory remarks by our Chairman of the Board Gerry Wilkinson, former Operations Manager for WDAS Radio and formerly a television producer for WHYY-TV.
On our panel (scheduled to speak) will be:
Pat Delsi, former owner of WSSJ Radio in Camden, NJ
Ed Dress, content producer for NBC 10's "The Investigators"
Alissa Ingram, Executive Producer for NBC 10's 11 pm news
Jillian Mele, NBC 10 reporter, 10 Show host and AM Traffic
Justin Pizzi, one of NBC 10's on air news reporters
Dan Stamm, content producer for NBC 10, WCAU-TV
There's a tour of the NBC 10, WCAU facilities. There's a free pizza lunch afterwards for you to speak one on one with our panel and Broadcast Pioneers officers.
At our first symposium (which was at NBC 10), a student asked us how to get an internship. We told her and she got one at an area television station. After the internship was over, they hired her part-time and then, they gave her a full-time position as a producer in Creative Services. This happened one month before college graduation. She said that she never would have gotten that job if she didn't attend our symposium.
Pat Delsi, our former president, mentioned that he was outside the Geator Gold studios at 7th and Market in Center City Philadelphia when a young man came up to him and asked if he happened to be Pat Delsi. Pat said, "Yes!" The young man mentioned the he attended one of our symposiums because he was having trouble getting an internship. He said with what he learned at the symposium, he was able to line up an internship with an area television station.
This is what can happen when students attend our symposiums. Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia; Innovators in Philly Broadcasting.
Your space is NOT reserved until we receive your application and $20. This event is limited to 60 students so that there can be enough one on one time. You will receive a confirmation e-mail once we have received your application and check. Print it and bring a copy with you to the symposium. Also bring your college ID.
IMPORTANT! Please be advised that it takes some time to process your registration. We only go to the Post Office Box about once a week and then it could take several days to process your application. Allow up to 10 days from the time you mail your check and reservation for your confirmation e-mail to arrive. Remember, we have no paid staff and are run strictly by volunteers.
Why do we charge $20? If you pay, you're likely to show up and since we can handle only 60 students, it guarantees us the best turnout. We do NOT keep any money. We use it to fund events like students attending our monthly luncheon and/or our annual banquet.
IMPORTANT! If you have NOT received your confirmation e-mail, please call us at (856) 365-5600 or e-mail us at: pioneers@broadcastpioneers.com! This is important because 8% of the registered students listed incorrect e-mail addresses or ones that couldn't be read. Two had mailboxes that were filled up. One came with no e-mail address listed and one came without an application form. It is important that you receive this confirmation e-mail as you will need it to gain admittance.
YOU WILL BE MEETING ALOT OF IMPORTANT PEOPLE! SO DRESS TO IMPRESS! Dress is business casual. If in doubt, look at our photos of past events. It is important to arrive on-time or even early. Parking in the NBC 10 lot is on a first come, first served on that morning. Try to carpool so that we can have room for everyone.
The facilities of WCAU, NBC 10 are located at City Avenue and Monument Road in Philadelphia. Public transportation stops nearby.
We will issue badges at the door. They must be worn at all times as this will serve as your NBC 10 temporary ID badge.
